Purpose
|
Riluzole is a sodium channel protein inhibitor and potent neuroprotective agent. It has been shown to preferentially block tetrodotoxin-sensitive sodium channels, which are associated with damaged neurons. In the presence of negative potentials, Riluzole was shown to also block tetrodotoxin-resistant sodium channels. It has been reported that Riluzole exerts its neuroprotective action under ischemic conditions, thereby suppressing glutamatergic receptor stimulation and calcium influx. Research shows that this product activates the TREK family of potassium channels and directly affects the glutamatergic system. Riluzole inhibits glutamate release from presynaptic terminals and increases Na+-dependent glutamate uptake in rat cortical synaptosomes. Riluzole blocks voltage-dependent Na+ channels and inhibits GABA uptake by striatal synaptosomes.
